“Wait… did you write today?”
That’s the little voice in my head that constantly chimes in right when I start feeling a little bit of peace.
Normally, it’s around 7 PM.
My body is transitioning into night mode when that little bit of dread pops up just to say:
“Hi… what have you been doing, you lazy bastard?”
Because all day — all damn day — I’m thinking about writing my next book.
Then the next day comes…
And I sleep right through my writing session.
And you know what people say about how they write a book?
“It’s one word at a time.”
The Golden Rule.
So now I follow my own non-negotiable rule when writing a book:
Make progress daily.
Even if it’s one sentence.
I can’t tell you how many days I had one-sentence days while writing my last book.
But considering it took me three-ish years to release it…
You can probably guess.
The only thing I can confidently tell you is this:
If you want to write a book, you have to write it.
And the way you write a book is one sentence at a time.
Happy writing!
P.S. I’ll probably share the opening of my next book next week!
Please like, comment, share, and tell me what you think! To me – the hardest part about writing a book is getting into the routine. But – once you’re in the routine – you’re winning!

It’s good that you’ve set yourself a time to focus on your writing. I tend to write late at night.
I think we all have our own rhythm and process for writing. I usually put 3 – 4 writing slots in my diary and do about an hour each time. Sometimes it’s harder than others!
I need to pluck up to courage to start, first. The advice makes it seem less daunting, so thanks!
I write when it feels right, so can go months without writing – apart from blog posts, book reviews etc. If I try when the spark isn’t there I never come up with anything worthwhile. I don’t worry, and I’ve got 15 books out there. Chill, my friend. It’ll be fine. 🙂
Ahhh wise words my friend! I gotta catch up to you!
No rush, no race. Just do your best work when it comes to you. 🙂
I really enjoyed Jasper, so I’m looking forward to the opening of your new book!
Also… about those one-sentence days… the number of creative excuses I’ve invented to snag those really could be a whole book of its own. My favorite is when I read a five minute article that’s only semi-loosely tied to my legit topic and talk myself into believing I did “research” that day and so I’m good because I -did- “work on” the book….
😃
I am writing two books and trying to write tru story about workers compensation when injury happens on work..how reality does not exist anymore everything is lie and cover up to protect employers not injured workers.
Yeah that’s wild man! Sorry you had to deal with that nonsense -sounds like a great book
Hey, Anthony! Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post! I agree, even a little writing progress each day counts. I’ve been feeling pretty stuck for ideas lately, though, and I can definitely relate to sleeping through writing time. By nighttime, I’m too tired to keep my eyes open. LOL. One sentence a day sounds like a good place to start again!
It all adds up! That’s for sure!
I’m more of a binge writer myself. I store up a bunch of stuff in my head, then regurgitate it onto the laptop when I find a spare hour or two. We’ve all got to do what works for us.
Couldn’t agree more – we gotta find what works
